Read any weird fiction? Suggestions where to start? Hidden gems? Etc.

surprisingly good

always been fond of this one… a short, light fantasy but weirdly meta and anachronistic.

Was thinking of stuff like this:

That's not very weird

>>35 ohh why didn't you say so… doesn't get much better on that list for me than junji ito… this one's from uzumaki

this was a favorite a while ago… reread it recently and it was all right, not sure i'd highly recommend it or anything. very american subculture-y.

Got a collection of Machen's short stories. Supposed to be good. Have you guys read anything by him?

i haven't… my only familiarity with machen is knowing that he wrote a short story about ghostly archers joining a famous battle… and that gave rise to a persistent urban legend that people had seen ghostly soldiers and/or angels join in the battle of mons during world war… world war… um… one of the world wars >_>

let us know how the other stories are

do you count bradbury as weird fiction?

Isn't that more SF/fantasy?

Seems like "Weird Fiction" is a particular blend: "Weird fiction is distinguished from horror and fantasy in its blending of supernatural, mythical, and even scientific tropes."

I recommend this one

bradbury was listed on the weird fiction page… and he definitely covers supernatural, mythical, and scientific. he's by no means just a fantasy or science fiction author.

My mistake. I've always thought of weird fiction as literature from the early 1900s, but you're right, other writers carried on with the genre way past the 40s.

Read any of his later books, btw? Just curious if they're very different than his debut.

haven't yet… i think i've only gotten up to the early 70s. there does seem to be a progression of weirdness, though.

I meant >>44, hehe. Danielewski and House of Leaves.

Will let you guys know how it is.
